By Charles Hefling, Monograph Series No. 15, 2003. 12 page pdf.

Hefling, an Episcopal Priest, Associate Professor of Theology at Boston College and Instructor in the Diaconal Formation Program of the Diocese of Massachusetts, presents us with a thesis that will open a dialogue surrounding the ordination rite for deacons. He shows connections between social facts (i.e. person is already identified as a deacon my his/her actions, works, etc), ceremonial events (ordination ceremony) and constitutive action (performing the role of deacon in the liturgy). He notes that: “…the church’s sacramental rites do not change anything or start anything; they register change that has already happened and announce situations that have already begun.”

There is no conclusion to this thesis; it is presented for discussion purposes only and would serve as an interesting topic for both diaconal formation and continuing education programs.
