The Fund for the Diaconate

The Fund for the Diaconate
is an independent nonprofit charitable organization which performs a vital service by assisting deacons - working, retired, in formation or disabled - who have insufficient funds for their needs. It is administered by a Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Grants and Fellowships
  • Grants are need-based, with three types available: Regular, Emergency, and Diaconal Formation. Grants may be distributed as periodic allowances for deacons in need of regular support, or one-time allowances to cover emergencies such as illness, dental care, disaster relief, etc. The Grants Coordinator may also assist in connecting deacons in need to other resources in their diocese.
  • Hallenbeck Fellowships are awards in honor of Deacon Ted Hallenbeck, offered to Episcopal vocational deacons canonically resident and in good standing. Awards enable them to attend conferences or educational events whose content is related to the diaconate and/or The Episcopal Church.

Planned Giving
Leaving your Legacy with The Fund enables your gift to help deacons and those in formation, now and in the future.

Episcopal Deaconesses were faith-filled women and the early pioneers of servant ministry. Being "set apart" as a deaconess was one of the few ways women could serve the Church in the years before the ordination of women.
