By Richard F. Grein, Monograph Series No. 1, 1987. 7 page pdf.

The Rt. Rev. Richard F. Grein is retired Bishop of New York, a past member of the NAAD Board of Directors, and formerly Bishop of Kansas at the time this homily was given.

Originally an essay, it was presented as the homily at the solemn Eucharist which closed the international conference of NAAD on June 6, 1987 in Kansas City, MO. In this monograph, Grein uses images of water taken from Holy Scripture and the Baptismal rite of creation, journey and vocation as metaphor for the role and importance of deacons for the modern church. Grein reminds us in his conclusion: “That which is consecrated on the altar, the deacon distributes. That which is in the process of becoming through consecration, which the Spirit has blessed, the deacon takes into the world.” Good reading for discussion on the re-emerged diaconate in the twenty-first century.
