Susan Wilds McArver. Monograph Series No. 18 , 2007. 15 page pdf.

This is a fascinating presentation originally given at the Fall 2006 meeting of The Ecumenical Network of the Diaconate in the USA.  Dr McArver gives a historically driven overview of how and why the diaconate saw a revival in the Lutheran tradition of Germany after its unification.  She hones in on the work of Theodore and Fredrike Fliedner and Johannes Wichern with reference to the Pietism movement within traditional Lutheranism and other Protestant denominations.
