Notice of Triennial Meeting of the Association for Episcopal Deaconsincluding Proposed Changes to the Constitution and By-Laws of the Association, June 15, 2013The triennial Diaconal Assembly scheduled for June 13-16, 2013 in Williamsburg will include a membership meeting on Saturday, June 15 at 10:00 AM. On the meeting agenda is a vote on proposed Constitution and By-Laws changes, recommended in a review by board members (click here to see the current constitution and by-laws with all proposed changes highlighted). As specified in article XII of the Constitution, members will have the opportunity to vote on these changes at the triennial meeting during the Diaconal Assembly. AED Diaconal Assembly 2013Time is running out to register for the Diaconal Assembly in June. The deadline is May 1.Our assembly, Jamestown: A Mere 400 Years. Weaving a New World View, will be held in Williamsburg, Va. June 13-16.
In addition to the workshops there will be an exhibit hall and a ministry faire where we can share resources for diaconal formation and ministry. The liturgies promise to be rich and meaningful. We begin in Jamestown at the Hunt Monument, site of the first Anglican celebration of the Eucharist in the colonies. Saturday there will be a festive Eucharist at the historic Bruton Parish church. We will have the triennial Stephen Recognition ceremony where deacons, who have been nominated by their diocese, will be honored for the significant ministries in which they are involved. Our assembly will also include a membership meeting in which we will conduct some of the ongoing work of the Association. Colonial Williamsburg offers many attractions dealing with life in colonial times. Your registration will include a pass to the shops, sites and historical dramatizations. The Woodlands Hotel and Suites is just walking distance or a short shuttle over to the historic sites. The Deacons' ResolvedHow will what we are doing here affect or involve people living in poverty? -- The Deacons’ Resolved At the most recent General Convention of The Episcopal Church held in Indianapolis in July of 2012, the Association for Episcopal Deacons sponsored the following resolution B008 – Resolved that the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church call upon its members to begin every meeting in calendar year 2013, whether at the parish, diocesan or church-wide level and no matter what the purpose, with this agenda item: "How will what we are doing here affect or involve people living in poverty?" This resolution was inspired by an initiative undertaken in the early 1990’s by the late Roman Catholic late Bishop Kenneth E. Untener, who for a three month period required meetings in the Diocese of Saginaw to start with this agenda item. (See Bishop Untener’s later reflection piece in Catholic Update “How Should We Think About the Poor?”) More recently, variations on this resolution were adopted in the Dioceses of Atlanta and Indianapolis. Looking Through a Diaconal Lens using AED’s View-Masters®The theme of AED’s presence at the 2012 General Convention of The Episcopal Church was “Looking Through a Diaconal Lens.” One device used to illustrate this theme was View-Masters® with custom-made reels containing images that depict a diaconal view of issues of poverty, hunger, natural disaster, gun violence, and attending a convention. While the View-Masters are fun toys that many will recall from their youth, the images on our custom reels are provocative and designed to stimulate discussion about how a deacon looks at a particular problem or need. There was also a large prop display reel with a dozen images depicting deacons and others in action. The Seven, 2012-13"The Seven" is AED's exciting new program for a mentored experience in diaconal ministry for young adults. Two New ResourcesComing on the heels of a fantastic conference for Archdeacons and directors of formation are two new resources for information and formation produced by dioceses. One, in the "Information" menu at left, is a new video about deacons, Dream a New World: Hearing a Deacon's Call, produced by the Diocese of North Carolina with support from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.
